Nottingham past and present
The old Saxon town is now marked by Nottingham Castle on Standard Hill, so named because there, in 1642, Charles I raised his standard (flag) at the outbreak of the English Civil Wars. The present castle, after renovation by the corporation (1875–78), houses a museum and art gallery.
