Web8 sep. 2024 · Chiasmus is a two-part sentence or phrase, where the second part is a reversal of the first. “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” is a simple example of this literary device. I need to clarify something, though. Chiasmus doesn’t have to use the same wording in both phrases to qualify as a chiasm. Check out this example: WebChiasmus comes from the Greek term meaning “diagonal arrangement.” It is used to describe two successive clauses or sentences where the keywords or phrases are repeated in both clauses, but in reverse order. Because of this system, chiasmus is sometimes known as a crisis-figure of speech.
