WebThe film premiered in Los Angeles on February 8, 1915. In early April, Boston newspapers announced that it would soon be shown in the city, also home to the first local NAACP chapter in the nation. Together with William Monroe Trotter, the organization spearheaded a vigorous campaign to ban the film. The first public showing of the film, then called The Clansman, was on January 1 and 2, 1915, at the Loring Opera House in Riverside, California. The second night, it was sold out and people were turned away. It was shown on February 8, 1915, to an audience of 3,000 people at Clune's Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.
